Make better youtube videos

We are always in the hunt of finding ways on how we can better our work and excel in the field that we are currently in.
Ain't we?
Same goes with the video creators rather the vloggers. Everyday we see about thousands of new video creators been logging into youtube to start their channel and working hard to put forward their contents to their audiences. That's really commendable.
Now in all this you do not want yourself to be lost in the crowd of the aficionados of vlogging. So, to make your work easy I am going to put out some of the best DSLR lenses that you as a beginner can use to make your videos stand out and make them more appealing to the audiences you are putting forward your content to. You content might be A-One but because your production is getting lost somewhere doesn't mean that you cannot get over it.

So lets see one by one what the DSLR lenses have to offer

  1. Wide angle lens:

  • Canon 10-18mm: This is one of the widest canon lenses that you can avail under 20 grands and by that I mean its one of the cheapest wide angle lenses that you can find in the market. The 10mm focal length really pulls the edges of the screen outwards thus distorting the video at the edges. But many people find it really interesting
The Pros:
Firstly, it gives them more space in the frame to include more background and contents that they can use in their videos to connect more with their audiences.
Secondly, in a cropped sensor ( Entry level DSLR where the focal length of the lens is multiplied by 1.5 times the original one) you can keep the DSLR really close to your face making your camera easily accessible within your hand's reach so that if you want to make any changes to the ISO or the exposure, it can readily be done.
Thirdly, people find it the YouTube vibe. Mostly youtubers use a wide angle lens to carry the vibe of elongated arms, legs and even the face looks slimmer while you use a wide angle lens because of the distortions at the edges.
Similar type to this is the Nikon 10-20mm where it performs the same way like the 10-18mm does.

The Cons:
Firstly, is it has a large f-stop number that means in indoor shooting you have to push your ISO settings to bring in more light to the frame. The Canon 10-18 mm comes with a f/4.5-f/5.5 aperture. That's one thing you should keep in mind.
Secondly, it cannot provide the shallow depth of field to your background. So if there is too much of contents in your background it might take away your viewers attention from you as you're not popping out of the frame.

  • Standard Kit lens: 18-55mm is also one of the better options if you do not want to spend on a wide angle lens. 2 reasons; firstly it comes out of the box. Secondly, 18mm is still a wide angle. While shooting in RAW the aperture automatically adjusts to f/3.5 in most standard kit lenses and allow you a good exposure and depth of field to work with.

     2. Prime Lens:

Some of the noteworthy Prime lenses to use for shooting videos are 24mm, 35mm, 40mm and 50mm. 85mm is one of the best but not good for vlogging as the camera will be out of reach due to the focal length. The lesser the focal length the easier its for you to tweak camera settings.

The frame rate flow is smooth as compared to the wide angle lens and the exposure provided is also more as the aperture it hosts is less than the later. Plus there are no distortions at the edges of the frame and produces a shallow depth of field. Prime lenses are best for portrait photography as they give the opportunity to tweak the exposure settings over a long range but fails to alter the focal length.

What more can you expect from a prime lens is its sharpness. The images and videos produced by a prime lens is way sharper than a standard kit lens. Even in low light condition a prime lens can perform better than a wide angle lens. Adding to it they are inexpensive, small in size and has Stepper Motor(STM for Canon lenses and SWM for Nikon lenses) which gives more smoothness, stabilization and quick focusing while recording.

I initially started with a prime lens to shoot my videos but as time progressed I preferred to move to wide angle as it provided me more space and domain to work on. But if you do not wish to incorporate so much background, prime lens is all what you need.

Other than these two categories of DSLR lenses, the telephoto and fish-eye lenses are mainly not preferred as the former gives a more compressed view while the later gives a very wide angle view not optimized for vlogging.
So, concluding, if you are planing to focus more on getting a wide angle view with more background and lesser depth of field then Wide Angle Lenses like 10-18mm and 18-55mm are optimum, but if you are planning for more sharpness, shallow depth of field and a prolific amount of exposure then a Prime Lens will be the choice for you.
If you need to know the lens you need as per your genre or what the abbreviations on a Canon lens mean then check my other blogs and do provide a feedback for me to produce more such contents.

Cheers for now!
